It shall remain nameless

Here is a new one which looks awfully close to a certain kitten character...
The head is inflated with an air pump. The outfit is made separately and added later.

Practice makes perfect

Now that my schedule is a bit more relaxed, I can focus on practice practice practice. It takes a tremendous amount of practice to get one form right. It's really rewarding to get a form down, though. Horses are tough because they have very thin legs that like to snap. Also, the more steps there are involved in making a form, the faster I have to move before the sugar gets too hard and begin cracking when cut with scissors.

I'll keep up the practice so I can show you new shapes. Stay tuned.

Finally coming together

It's been a hectic couple of months, but the candy making business is slowly but surely coming together.
Here are the latest pieces. Candy craft is very tricky as I'm finding out. The sugar is very sensitive to moisture and heat. It's a constant battle to keep it at the right temperature and moisture level, otherwise, the candy hardens too quickly or be sticky after being sculpted. The longer I practice, the more respect I have for anyone who does this for a living.

Enjoy!

8/19/09 Doggy

I've been absent for a while. It's been pretty hectic around here. I've been working on making dog. Dog is similar to bunny but a bit more advanced. There are more steps that I need to complete in the same amount of time that I have to make a bunny.
The collar is something that I'm struggling with a bit it's tricky to make it even width. The skintone color was not intensional.

Still making bunnies, but I've started playing around trying to create other shapes: birds, frogs, babies (fetus babies as I call them), Godzilla. It is pretty hard to be precise with sugar, so there are a lot of "this resembles something familiar..." Practice makes perfect, so I keep on trying. The material is pretty unforgiving in that it is difficult to fix a mistake since the material hardens so quickly. You have to know the exact steps to get to the final form. It is not as improvisational than I initially thought. I plan on taking step by step photos of the process next time. Your body needs to remember the moves from repetition. Making a bunny is feeling almost automatic now that my hands know exactly where they need to go. It's a good feeling to have some progress.

"fetus baby" definitely creepy without facial features. I don't let the pieces harden all the way when I'm practicing, so they get droopy.
"EAT MY BABY!!"

I recently spoke to my teacher and he mentioned that I make 50-100 pieces whenever I have time. I'm still struggling to handle the hot sugar which, if I'm not careful, can blister my fingers very easily. Finally started adding color. I've been making bunnies for the last month or so. I'm getting the hang of it finally.
